Simple & comfy rooms with character on pleasant, pretty grounds of indigenous history museum in indigenous village 10-15 min walk from Sauraha, the gateway to Chitwan National Park. Learn about the Tharu, the herder-fisher original residents of Chitwan. Mountain view on clear days. Chitwan NP offers jungle safaris–elephant, jeep and canoe rides, bird walks, elephant breeding center, hikes–and we offer a great museum and village and bike tours and more. Museum and guest house run by local Tharu community. It is a  non-profit organization.

The Space

The space compares well with budget hotels in Sauraha but is not deluxe. Good for right person, looking for a fun comfy quite place and unique cultural/village experience.

  • Good Wifi and electricity.
  • 3 rooms, each with attached bath and hot water (after sunshine)
  • Shared kitchen (Kitchen has electric kettle, gas stove, and basic pots/pans/. Nothing fancy.).
  • Museum grounds are 3 min from nearest cluster of houses, surrounded by fields (green-as-green-can-be rice in summer, bright yellow mustard in winter) and fish pond (with kingfishers). The national park forest is a short walk away.
  • Rooms decorated with local traditional art and objects.
  • 2 rooms have 2 single beds each, one has queen size bed.
  • The rooms are not in a traditional house (it’s concrete, like all the hotels/lodges in Sauraha and most houses in the area), but we can take you to visit traditional mud/thatch houses.
  • The rooms are on the 2nd floor of non exhibit space, with outdoor balcony. The space is in separate building from museum exhibit space but museum does get group visitors during the day.Generally good for children (goats nearby) but 2nd floor balcony means toddlers must be watched carefully.
  • No late night/early morning motorcycles.

Other Things to Note

Please see our /Facebook page/Trip Advisor for more info.

Easy access to Chitwan National Park and all park activities.

Easy access to Sauraha and its restaurants and shops.

Safe area, village setting.

The museum is in Bachhauli village on outskirts of Sauraha, about 15 min walk from the craziness of the town center, where there are lots of restaurants, shops, and nightlife. Closest restaurant is 8-10 min walk. Local tea shops just a few minutes walk. Bus park 8 minute walk.

Lots to do in the area: park activities but also Tharu cooking class, bike rides, bird walks, village tours, and good walking/running options.

The mountains are visible on some clear days but are far away (but still impressive). Best views in November and December and very clear days.

It’s possible you can help with museum if you want, or volunteer at local school and other community organizations.

Chitwan is hot in summer, very wet in monsoon, and cold in winter (no central heating). Please bring appropriate clothing.

The Tharu were the residents of the valley before malaria control in late 1950s allow people from hills to move into the area. They speak separate language from Nepali. The museum aims to give a much more accurate picture of Tharu society than in the exotic tourist brochures (that other groups spread).(See the museum webpage/FPpage for more info. Make sure you have the right Tharu museum–in Bachhauli near Sauraha, Chitwan.)

We look forward to your visit!
